Social Graces, a follow-up

It turns out I’m not the only one who wonders about manners. In the December issue of Domino, the Adventuress meets with a manners expert to brush up on holiday manners. She posted a one-minute video for the crash course in minding-your-manners too.

I think with all the parties and gifts and social mingling that goes along with the holidays, manners and etiquette do become a subject to consider.

For more on manners, here’s a quick list I compiled:

  • The full text of Emily Post’s original book on etiquette from 1922. It’s actually pretty entertaining to read.
  • For more useful modern tips, check out the Emily Post Institute. Some recent articles include a holiday tipping guide and a section entitled WWED (What would Emily do?).
  • I also found New York magazine’s Urban Etiquette Handbook, published about a year ago but tackles some of the many issues plaguing the city dweller. Some issues are universal like the section on cell phone etiquette – this goes double for the woman in the brown overcoat who insists on jabbering away on her cell phone in the parking garage elevator. What is so important that it cannot wait two minutes until you are at your desk. Really?!?!
  • Get Mr. Manners podcast, part of the Quick and Dirty Tips series (tip thanks to Annie!)
